Miami Nightclub Incident Circulating on Social Media Prompts Debate Over Fatphobia

A story shared on Instagram and later circulated widely on TikTok has prompted online debate over fatphobia, accountability among friends, and whether the video was Ai or “ragebate”.

The story originated from an Instagram Reel posted by user @pradagtali, which has since been deleted.

In the video, the creator described an incident that allegedly occurred at a Miami nightclub, Vendôme, involving a group of friends attempting to enter the venue to celebrate New Year’s Eve. According to the video, the group was able to gain entry through a promoter they knew; however, one member of the group, described as a plus-size woman, was told she would need to pay a $300 fee to enter, while the others were not required to pay.

The video alleged that the fee was imposed solely on the plus-size individual, which prompted accusations of fatphobia. The friends reportedly declined to pay the fee initially since it was presumed to be a no-cost night out. After approximately two hours waiting outside the club and deliberating, the group ultimately decided not to pay the fee. According to the woman who posted the video, she asked her plus-size friend whether she could cover transportation costs for her to return home while the remaining friends enter the club to continue their night.

The incident quickly gained traction across TikTok, where users expressed their opinions. Some commenters criticized the group’s decision to enter the club without their friend, while others focused less on the incident itself and more on the legitimacy of the video.

Several users speculated that the story may have been fabricated for “ragebate” or generated using AI, stating that many viewers encountered the story through commentary videos rather than the original post. Screenshots of the Instagram profile circulated online, showing the Reel being posted on the account, but had since been deleted, which further fueled skepticism.

Separately, a TikTok user, Annah May, posted a video sharing her perspective on the situation, implying she was the plus-size friend. Many do not believe she is authentic, due to the fact that she is simply re-telling the story with no additional information. Others believe her story and are outraged by the discrimination, especially because they do not believe she is even plus-size at all.

It has not been confirmed by the original creator if Annah May actually is the plus-size friend.

In response to the speculation, the original Instagram account later posted a new Reel taking ownership of the story and reaffirming that the events described were real.

In the follow-up post, the creator also cautioned viewers to be wary of individuals online claiming to be the plus-size friend involved in the incident.
